University Size Increase
Forces New Construction

By Donn Kessler
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The University, faced with rapid
growth, is making a continual effort
to keep the classroom and building
facilities in line with the needs of
the growing student body.

One case in point is the new
School of Architecture building.
Situated on Carr's Hill, this modern
building scheduled for completion
early next year has a workshop for
experimentation on concrete structures
and building materials, new
classrooms, offices, a library, and a
photo laboratory.

In other areas, the University
has begun work on a new addition
to the Medical Center to handle the
increased traffic at the University
Hospital, and upon a new School of
Education building.

A new addition to the College is
Wilson Hall, which is located next
to Cabell Hall, the main classroom
building at the University. Finished
last year, the four-story structure
has faculty offices, two 200-seat
and two 400-seat lecture halls, and
seminar rooms for graduate students.
The building also houses the
English Department library and an
auditorium.

New Pipes

The most noticeable work done
lately has been on the Grounds.
New pipes and underground installations
on the West Range and in
front of the library necessitated the
upheaval of the area last year. The
temporary inconvenience will eventually
be outweighed, however, by
the long-run benefits of the underground
structures.

Disastrous Effects

Constant work is always being
done on the Lawn. With summer
weather having had a disastrous
effect on the grass, the Department
of Buildings and Grounds is once
more trying to restore green to the
open area.

While the unsightly scene caused
by the construction on the Grounds
has caused many members of the
community to criticize the University,
the long range results of the
construction will probably be to
bring more convenience to students.
